International Conferences and Academic Exchanges

MacKay Medical College has designated mitochondrial medicine as one of its thrust areas in biomedical research. In the past years, we have held three international conferences focused on mitochondrial roles in health, aging, and disease. At the invitation of Professor Yau-Huei Wei, President of the Asian Society for Mitochondrial Research and Medicine (ASMRM), and the Taiwan Society for Mitochondrial Research and Medicine (TSMRM), for two consecutive terms, many eminent, international scientists and clinicians engaged in research on mitochondrial medicine delivered lectures at MMC campus symposia and workshops. At the 12th International Conference of ASMRM and the TSMRM 2014 Annual Meeting, Professor Wei served as the Chair of the Scientific Program Committee accompanied by delegates from MacKay Medical College. On the occasion of the Poster Competition for this event, a student from MMC was awarded the First Prize.

The Department of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology places a high priority on international academic and professional exchanges. A large number of international clinical audiologists, speech language pathologists, and professionals in other relevant areas are invited to the department to give up-to-date topical speeches, promote international academic exchanges, and cultivate international perspectives in students. Such outstanding scholars as Dr. Adrian Fuente, Professor Kimitaka Kaga, and Dr. Christine Yoshinaga-Itano have presented enlightening lectures on audiology, speech perception, and spoken word recognition.

The Department of Nursing has participated in academic exchange programs with Cedarville University (USA), National University of Singapore, Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau, and School of Nursing Peking Union Medical College. Currently the yearly exchange activities are short visits of the students and faculty members.

International Student Activities and Services

The Medical Students Cultural Exchange (MSCE) program at MacKay Medical College (MMC) was initiated in 2011, as part of the Northern California Luke Christian Medical Mission ministry to bring cross cultural experiences, language training, and friendship to MMC students. MSCE serves as a unique mission by bringing Christian college students and faculty members from the United States together with representatives from MMC every summer at an English camp. MSCE owes its success to the participation and sharing of life experiences by both Taiwanese and American medical school students through its diverse, creative activities and presentations on topics relevant to healthcare, science, and culture.

Medical students are enthusiastic and eager to emulate the missionary zeal of Dr. MacKay by traveling abroad to countries where improved health care is direly needed. MMC students, led by their teachers, visited a nursing school on the island of Kiribati in the South Pacific to teach essential medical knowledge such as disease prevention and promote optimum health to local young people as well as to participate in various cultural exchanges.
