Research and Facilities

Our long-term strategy for academic research will focus on aging medical research including six particular areas of research interests which have been implemented. They are namely mitochondrial medicine, aging and senescence related cardiovascular medicine, cochlear implant and signal processing strategies, inflammation and carcinogenesis, autoimmunology, and the study of the mechanism and improvement of gerontological health problems. These projects are conducted through close cooperation between the basic academic faculty members at the MacKay Medical College and the clinicians at the MacKay Memorial Hospital.

Apart from the above mentioned integral program projects, the research interests of our academic faculty members cover a spectrum of fields that include physiological studies of cardio-ventricular diseases; therapeutic effects of some natural products; physiological studies in neuropathic pain development; carcinogenesis of certain types of cancer; therapeutic drug design; stem cell development and its clinical applications; and studies in cell cycle checkpoints during mitotic progression among other key areas of research.

Research and Facilities

Administrative Support for Academic Research

Establishment of the Biomedical Instrumental Center

The Biomedical Instrumental Center supports the advanced scientific research of all academic faculty members by providing free access to sophisticated and state-of-the-arts technology.

To date, the Center has installed numerous precious scientific instruments, including flow cytometer, Seahorse Bioscience extracellular fluid analyzer, microplate analyzer, real-time PCR, analytical-grade upright and inverted fluorescent microscopes, confocal microscope, FPLC and HPLC to name a few. In addition, the Center also is equipped with a micro-oxygen manipulated incubation system, cell culture rooms, and a P2 level laboratory.

Financial Incentives for Academic Research

Start-up fund for newly recruited faculty members

• Matching funds for all research grants from the government and industry

• Internal collegiate research grant for faculty members who may fail to apply for outside grants

• Monetary achievement award for faculty who publish papers in reputed international journals
