MacKay Memorial Hospital, under the jurisdiction of the Presbyterian Church, is one of the most important medical centers in Taiwan. It was established in memory of Dr. George Leslie MacKay, who following in the footsteps of his Master, came to Taiwan with the message of salvation for all people. Even in those early days, Dr. MacKay was concerned for the whole person and ministered to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of each patient. According to Christ’s teaching to love one another and care for the disadvantaged, MacKay Memorial Hospital endeavors to carry on medical evangelism by providing holistic care for body, mind, and spirit.
As a main teaching hospital for MacKay Medical College (MMC), MacKay Memorial Hospital provides multi-dimensional activities, based on belief, humanity, and technology, for the growth of medical students. From their first year, the students start to learn basic clinical skills, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation and wound care in the OSCE center, and learn from real patients by experiencing the regular daily activity of an attending physician in the wards, operating theaters, and outpatient department. Along with the growth of medical knowledge and experience, students are requested to learn more clinical skills via hands-on in the clinical rotations to different departments during their 5th and 6th years. With rich teaching resources, excellent curriculum planning, reasonable teachers-student ratio, and role models of followers of Dr. MacKay, medical students of MMC achieve clinical competency beyond international standards.
