I.       Concept of Curriculum Structure

Under the medical education as the main body, basic science, the program implements visual science, medicine, clinical optometry, and interdisciplinary courses. It integrates clinical resources from the f Mackay Memorial Hospital to create an integrated learning pathway for students.

In addition, in alignment with the school's general education policy, courses in the fields of humanities, arts and social sciences are incorporated. We hope to practice Dr. MacKay’s dedication and cultivate optometric healthcare professionals with “holistically body, mind and spirit”.

 

II.    Teaching objectives and curriculum planning

The teaching objectives for each academic year are as follows:

The First academic year: Basic concepts of medicine and optometry.

The Second year: The theory and clinical practice of optometry and ophthalmic dispensing.

The Third academic year: The theory and clinical practice of low vision and contact lens fitting.

The Fourth year: Clinical optometry application (student internship)

 

Overall, the features of our curriculum include the following:

1. Plan optometry and interdisciplinary courses based on the needs of the workplace and industry.

2. Adhere the educational spirit of the optometry system and focus on foundational academic knowledge and practical skills

3. Strengthen cooperation with the optometry industry to closely integrate teaching with industry practices..

4. Foster international exchange with the relevant academic community in optometry to expose students to the latest knowledge and technology in the field.

 

The General courses: It includes courses in the fields of humanities, art, MacKay lectures, introduction to freshmen.

 

The Basic Science Courses: Applied physics, biochemistry, geometric optics, and visual science, etc.

 

The medicine courses: anatomy, physiology, ophthalmology and pharmacology, etc.

 

The optometry theory and application courses: optometry, contact lens, ophthalmic lens dispensing, low vision, etc.

 

The clinical internship practical courses: After completing the three years of study, students are arranged to go to the MacKay Hospital and optometry clinic for internships. To expand students' field of optometry by offering courses on comprehensive clinical case studies and optometric marketing.

 

Other professional elective courses: In addition to the required courses for various majors with other professional elective courses. Such as thin film technique, artificial intelligence algorithm, visual regenerative medicine, etc.
